Set a countdown to any upcoming date or event. Shows days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining — saved in your browser so it persists across visits.
Set a target date to start
Countdown timers serve as essential digital utilities across event coordination, productivity management, and technical countdown protocols. Unlike simple analog timers, digital timers operating in modern web platforms leverage browser animation frames and UTC epoch timestamps to maintain sub-second accuracy without phase drift.
Traditional web timers relying solely on setInterval or setTimeout frequently suffer from drift caused by JavaScript thread blocking, tab background throttling, and operating system sleep cycles.
To counteract drift, precision timers calculate remaining duration by referencing the current time directly against a target Unix timestamp:
$$\Delta t = T_{target} - T_{current}$$
Where:
performance.now() or Date.now().| Component | Calculation Formula | Representation |
|---|---|---|
| Days | $\lfloor \Delta t / (1000 \times 60 \times 60 \times 24) \rfloor$ | Full calendar days remaining |
| Hours | $\lfloor (\Delta t % (1000 \times 60 \times 60 \times 24)) / (1000 \times 60 \times 60) \rfloor$ | Hours within day (0-23) |
| Minutes | $\lfloor (\Delta t % (1000 \times 60 \times 60)) / (1000 \times 60) \rfloor$ | Minutes within hour (0-59) |
| Seconds | $\lfloor (\Delta t % (1000 \times 60)) / 1000 \rfloor$ | Seconds within minute (0-59) |
JavaScript (Web API)
function startCountdown(targetDate, onTick, onComplete) {
const target = new Date(targetDate).getTime();
const timer = setInterval(() => {
const now = Date.now();
const remaining = target - now;
if (remaining <= 0) {
clearInterval(timer);
onComplete();
return;
}
const days = Math.floor(remaining / (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24));
const hours = Math.floor((remaining % (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24)) / (1000 * 60 * 60));
const minutes = Math.floor((remaining % (1000 * 60 * 60)) / (1000 * 60));
const seconds = Math.floor((remaining % (1000 * 60)) / 1000);
onTick({ days, hours, minutes, seconds });
}, 250);
return () => clearInterval(timer);
}
Python (CLI Timer)

time.sleep(0.5)
